Reasons to watch: JTBC is turning viewers onto a life of crime in its newest drama, The Apartment Job. Starring Ji Sung, he and a merry band of wannabe con artists will be going up against Park Byung-eun with millions on the line.
Ji Sung is a former gangster, current moneylender, and when we first meet him, he’s a man who is solely focused on procuring a huge sum of money. 10 billion won to be exact (roughly 7 million dollars). Contrary to what you might suspect, he only wants that money to save the life of his beloved mentor, played by Jung Jin-young. As luck would have it, he stumbles across some valuable information that leads him to start a convoluted scam to save his mentor’s life.
An apartment building with vacant units just so happens to have a massive maintenance fund controlled by its residents’ association. Get into the building, get on the association board, and boom, you’ve (ostensibly) got billions of won at your fingertips. Ji Sung does the most logical thing: hire an entire fake family and recruit Ha Yoon-kyung to be his faux wife. Adorned with a fresh new family, he moves into the building and runs for a seat on the association. As he settles in, fends off resident busybody Moon Sori, and politicks for votes, Ji Sung ends up uncovering a dark secret that could imperil the whole building.
There will be mystery and mayhem galore. No matter what shape the plot takes, I’m thrilled at the prospect of watching Ji Sung stretch comedic muscles again; he’s so versatile but it’s been years since he has taken on a role that gives him space to be tough, broody, and funny. The entire cast lineup looks wonderful, and I’m especially happy to see Ha Yoon-kyung back on screen. Ever since Undercover Miss Hong wrapped, I’ve been itching for a caper with a fun, ragtag crew, and I have high hopes that The Apartment Job will deliver.
