Curry Barker is taking in the success of his recent box office smash Obsession.
The 26-year-old YouTuber-turned-filmmaker has reportedly signed an eight-figure deal with Universal and Blumhouse, according to THR.
Curry will write, direct and produce the project, which will mark his third film with Universal and Blumhouse, following Obsession and his upcoming Anything But Ghosts, which he also wrote, directed and stars in. That pic has already been shot.
“Curry Barker has an exceptional ability to tap into the cultural zeitgeist, pairing an innate instinct for what resonates with audiences with extraordinary filmmaking prowess. Barker’s talent is redefining what’s possible and we’re thrilled to continue our partnership with him.” – NBCUniversal Entertainment chairman Donna Langley shared in a statement with THR
Details on the new project are being kept under wraps, but is an original horror idea, which he pitched to top brass at Universal.
“This film is something I’ve been excited to make for a while, and I’m thrilled to be reteaming with Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Universal Film Group for it. They’ve built the kind of home for bold, original storytelling that every filmmaker dreams of, and I couldn’t imagine better collaborators for this film.” – Curry Barker, THR
Back in May, it was reported that Curry was given a preemptive offer of $10 million sight unseen for his next project, though it is unknown which studio that was. Blumhouse and Universal also reportedly had right to first negotiations for his next project due to a deal made before Obsession.
In addition to this project, Curry has also reportedly closed a deal to write and direct a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie for A24.
The filmmaker previously revealed that he has a “cool idea” for an Obsession sequel.
