Simone Biles is opening up about the microaggressions she faced over the weekend.
The 29-year-old Olympic gymnast took to her Instagram story on Sunday (July 12), sharing that she was mistaken for two different Black athletes that day.
“it’s not even 6am and I’ve already gotten called Dominique Dawes 2x and Sha’Carri once,” she wrote over a photo of a sunrise, adding three laughing face emojis.
If you don’t know, Dominique Dawes is a 49-year-old retired Olympic gymnast, who competed in Atlanta in 1996, in Barcelona in 1992, and in Sydney in 2000. She won gold in a team event in Atlanta, as well as bronze for her floor routine. She then also won bronze in team events in Barcelona and Sydney.
Sha’Carri Richardson is a 26-year-old Olympic track and field sprinter who competed in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. She won gold in the 4 x 100 m relay and silver in the 100 m.
She also qualified for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, but was then disqualified from competing after testing positive for marijuana in a drug test.
Simone Biles has been mistaken for someone else before
Back in 2023, Simone called out a media outlet for publishing an article about her and using the photo of another Black gymnast, Shilese Jones.
“This picture isn’t even me…….. try again,” she shared on X/Twitter at the time.
After correcting their mistake, the outlet replied to Simone‘s post, saying, “We have corrected the photo and the story and on social media.”
This past week, Simone responded to questions about why she attended Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce‘s wedding.
She also recently hit back at critics of her going on vacation following a hospitalization, where she said she almost died.
