Reasons to watch: Netflix is taking us centuries into the past, for a dark story about supernatural mayhem in, The East Palace. Nam Joo-hyuk makes his post-military return as the lead, with Roh Yoon-seo and Jo Seung-woo joining him in this sageuk about evil spirits and royal intrigue.
Jo Seung-woo holds the throne, but danger lurks everywhere for his family. He’s less concerned with earthly enemies than he is with a powerful spirit who is plaguing all residents of the East Palace. When the crown prince, and the king’s last surviving son, falls deathly ill, our king makes the decision to stop what’s haunting the family by any means necessary. In fact, he makes his son’s life or death stakes Nam Joo-hyuk and Roh Yoon-seo’s problem.
Nam Joo-hyuk is uniquely blessed with the ability to see the dead still clinging to this world, and to cut down spirits with his blade. His reputation precedes him, and the king has Nam held captive in the palace with two options for returning home: exorcise the palace or death. (Very poor choices if you ask me, so glad I’m not a horror-sageuk hero.) Nam has just one source of help, a court lady who can hear ghosts, Roh Yoon-seo. Forced together by the king, they become reluctant allies as they try to uncover the true horrors dwelling in the East Palace.
Get ready for a spooky, creepy tale, filled with action and supernatural forces. The main cast is also an interesting combination of experienced actors and rising stars, and I’m interested in seeing how the Jo-Nam-Roh trio play off of each other.
