If you had told me at the start of this episode that the season would end with Cal proposing to Maggie and the two possibly fostering Tracy, I would not have believed you.
This episode is by far my favourite episode of the entire show. We got to see Frank and Edna help future generations, Cal and Maggie reconcile, Sydney find happiness and many of the characters entering new seasons of life.
Sydney and Amir were quite the duo in this episode. Aside from their incredibly steamy get together, they made for a very good pairing. They had each other’s back like they have done all season but this episode for them felt very different. They weren’t just two people being close, they were a highly connected couple and it was lovely to watch. Syd has been in need of some happiness since her break up with Rafe and I think Amir is going to be a good source of that for her. Although I do think they could have been less harsh on Rob, especially after his break up.
Frank and Edna are honestly the epitome of couple goals, I adore that we get to see them working together to create a future for many people. Their relationship is so sweet, I’m so glad that we have had a happier season for them after the last couple with Edna being ill.
I really enjoyed the build up to Cal and Maggie getting back together. Watching Syd and Edna be so incredibly obvious with their scheming was hilarious. I love the fact that the characters care just as much about Cal and Maggie’s relationship as the audience do.
Maggie lying to keep Ben and Tracy together was the catalyst for almost everything big that happened in the last ten minutes of the episode. I truly think had she not done that then Cal may never have been open to discussing reconciliation with her or at least not anytime soon. I don’t think Ben would have said he was guilty if she hadn’t had done that and I don’t think that Tracy would be willing to go and live with Cal and Maggie if she hadn’t.
At the start of the episode Cal told Maggie that he didn’t think she could fully commit to love and him being able to see her willing to throw away what she worked her whole life for made him know that she was genuinely willing to fall completely with him. It was an absolutely incredible performance from Chad Michael Murray (Cal) and Morgan Kohan (Maggie), the raw emotions and the facial expressions during that back and forth were so amazing.
The proposal scene was genuinely perfect, the song choice brought everything together so nicely and Cal looking down and realising that he was already on one knee was fantastic. Side note : She definitely said yes before that kiss and before Tracy came in so I’m taking that as a sign they are engaged now.
I don’t think this season could have ended any better for Cal and Maggie. Their journey over the course of the four seasons has been a spectacle to watch and seeing them get to a proposal was so lovely. I actually think that Tracy wanting to stay with them ties this whole season together so nicely, I have said since very early on that Cal seems like he would foster Ben and Tracy just to keep them together and since Maggie was about to throw everything away to keep them together too, it’s clear that they are on the same page.
I truly cannot wait to see where we pick up the next season. I am so excited to see Cal and Maggie venture into this new season of life and how that affects all the characters around them.
Season 5 is going to be one to watch!
