Gong Hyo-jin returns to work as A Bona Fide Killer

MBC has dropped the first teaser for upcoming drama A Bona Fide Killer featuring Gong Hyo-jin (When the Stars Gossip) as the titular killer. Based on the webtoon of the same name, the adaptation follows the struggles of a working mom, who happens to have the world’s most dangerous profession.

On top of a rooftop, the legendary sniper Kingfisher (Gong Hyo-jin) fires her weapon, and the bullet zips through a small window opening and into the head of her target. “One shot, one kill,” the teaser describes Kingfisher, but then the music cuts to a more upbeat number as the assassin’s other identity is revealed: wife and mother Yoo Bo-na.

At home, Bo-na is a regular housewife. She helps her husband Kwon Tae-sung — played by Jung Joon-won (Resident Playbook) — pick out his outfit, plays with her daughter, and gets scolded by her mother-in-law. Even the top killer cannot avoid her in-law’s nagging, and Bo-na sheepishly explains that she never held a knife for this “purpose” (i.e., cutting onions).

While her mother-in-law does everything in her power to keep the patriarchy alive (“Do you usually make Tae-sung do the housework?” she asks aghast), her husband seems more open-minded. His behavior, though, grates on his mother to the point where she chucks an apple at him, but Bo-na flexes her killer reflexes to everyone’s shock — minus Tae-sung who remains clueless.

Since her maternity leave is over, Bo-na returns to work, and her boss Sung Dong-il (We Are All Trying Here) welcomes back their ace. However, this also means the people chasing after the elusive sniper are back on the hunt, and leading the charge is her very own husband and his best friend Detective Lee Dong-jin, played by Lee Sang-yi (The Legend of Kitchen Soldier).

Directed by PD Yoon Jong-ho (Lovely Runner) with scripts written by Kim Eun-hee (The Golden Spoon), MBC’s A Bona Fide Killer begins its 14-episode adventure July 31 in the Friday-Saturday slot.
