Paramount is betting on the Duffer Bros. to turn the fall 2028 box office upside down. The studio has dated the Duffers’ mysterious project for Nov. 3, 2028.
No plot details are known about the project, which Matt and Ross Duffer will write and direct. Paramount is describing it as an event film, but with all things involving the pair, its all being kept under lock and key.
The Duffers spent the last decade at Netflix overseeing the streamer’s breakout hit Stranger Things, which catapulted them to be among the most important creatives at the streamer. Ahead of the series finale dropping on Dec. 31, 2025, the new David Ellison-owned Paramount lured the Duffers with an exclusive, four-year pact that will see them create movie, TV and streaming projects they will make via their Upside Down Pictures banner.
The move sees them reunite with Cindy Holland, chair of direct-to-consumer at Paramount, and Paramount TV Studios president Matt Thunell, who were among the execs at Netflix who took a chance on the Duffers and Stranger Things back in 2015.
The opportunity to create theatrical movies was part of the Duffers’ impetus to move to Paramount. Several supersized Stranger Things episodes had theatrical feels and lengths, with the finale hitting theaters to strong results.
In a statement at the time of joining Paramount, the pair said making movies at a studio “with such a storied Hollywood legacy is a privilege we don’t take lightly.”
