Katie Couric is opening up about a scary medical episode that left her unable to remember several hours of her day.
The 69-year-old journalist detailed the incident in a July 6 Substack post, calling it “The Day I’ll Never Remember.” Katie said the health scare happened on June 27 while she was in Colorado with her husband, John Molner, for the Aspen Ideas Festival.
“This was a freaky occurrence, it could have been much more serious,” Katie wrote. “Ultimately, I’m relieved—even though several hours of a Saturday in June will always be missing for me.”
Katie said she and John started the day at the festival before heading to the Aspen Institute, where she was scheduled to speak on two panels. She said grabbing lunch at a hot dog stand was the last thing she remembered.
John later shared that he and one of Katie’s interns realized she seemed “out of it” after her speeches, prompting a trip to Aspen Valley Hospital.
“When I was asked the month, the year, and who was president, I got them wrong,” Katie wrote. “I wasn’t sure of the month. I thought it was 2024. And I believed Joe Biden was president.”
John said doctors initially began stroke protocol, but an MRI showed no signs of a stroke. Katie was later diagnosed with transient global amnesia, or TGA, which a neurologist described as “a sudden, temporary loss of the ability to form new memories.”
Katie is not the first celebrity to experience amnesia, Justin Theroux and Jeff Probst previously told similar stories.
