Spirit-catcher Nam Joo-hyuk enters The East Palace
by lovepark
The spirit world invades the real world in Netflix’s upcoming horror sageuk The East Palace. Marking the return of Nam Joo-hyuk (Vigilante) since his military enlistment, he plays spirit-catcher Gu-cheon who is brought into the palace to unravel the secrets that lay hidden in its corridors.
The teaser opens to Gu-cheon marching alone beneath the red moon as he notes the ominous feeling in the air. According to the king Jo Seung-woo (Divorce Attorney Shin), a deep resentment has entrenched itself into every corner of the palace, so he seeks Gu-cheon’s aid to fix it. The spirit-catcher explains how there are many kinds of spirits such as won-gwi, the souls that die bearing deep resentment, and it appears that one such spirit is stirring trouble.
In order to find out more, Gu-cheon ventures into the spirit realm, and Court Lady Saeng-gang, played by Roh Yoon-seo (The Frog), tethers him to their world as he dives beneath the waters to find the spirits. Though not a spirit-catcher, Saeng-gang has the peculiar ability to hear the dead, and as a result, gets entangled in these palace affairs.
They say once you step into the palace, the only way to leave is through death. As the king reminds his subjects of the place they have entered, Gu-cheon and Saeng-gang team up to deal with the restless souls bleeding into theirs. As the two worlds collide, creating a corrupt reflection of the palace cast in red, Gu-cheon says that all those who sin will eventually be punished, so only one question remains: who is the one that sinned?
The 8-episode horror fantasy is written by the team behind Bulgasal: Immortal Souls and The guest, Kwon Sora and Seo Jae-won, while PD Choi Jung-kyu (Soundtrack #2) takes the director’s seat. The East Palace premieres July 17 on Netflix.
