The first reactions to Christopher Nolan‘s highly anticipated new movie The Odyssey are rolling in!
The film, which stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, has started screening for members of the press ahead of its July 17 theatrical release, and the early response is looking very strong.
According to reaction roundups from Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, and others, critics are praising the movie’s scale, IMAX presentation, performances, and craft work, with several calling it one of Nolan‘s biggest swings yet.
Variety’s Jazz Tangcay called the movie “a work of art,” praising Nolan‘s handling of the Homer story, as well as the cinematography, costumes, sound, editing, and Ludwig Goransson‘s score.
Collider’s Steven Weintraub also gave the movie a major endorsement, calling it “incredible” and urging audiences to see it in IMAX 70mm.
The Hollywood Reporter’s Aaron Couch highlighted a much darker side of the film, teasing that The Odyssey includes “a fleshed out horror sequence,” a first from Nolan.
Along with Matt, the star-studded cast includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, and Samantha Morton.
